Apple CEO Tim Cook Apologizes For Apple Maps

It took a little longer than we expected, but Apple CEO Tim Cook today issued a letter to all Apple customers saying that the new Maps app, which replaced Google Maps when iOS 6 launched last week, “fell short” of the quality Apple customers have grown to expect.

“At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers,” Cook said in the public letter. “With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.”

Apple's Maps app was the focus of much criticism across the web almost as soon as it launched. Locations around the world were flat out missing, mislabeled or in the wrong place, sparking a bit of an online outrage from customers and others.

The most surprising portion of the letter, in my eyes, is the fact that Cook actually suggests people use other companies Maps apps while things get worked out:

“While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app,” said Cook.

How is the Maps app working out for you? Do you think Apple would have released a broken service like this had Steve Jobs still been holding the reigns?
